    fragile.  sensitive.

    soft words –

and I had done my best to outgrow them.

small, I thought, like infant's shoes.

    Useless for getting anywhere.

    Perhaps another woman's words.

    Perhaps.

    But not Mine.

What good would they be in a storm?

After all, these were hurricane winds—

    windows boarded.

And everything that could be swept away,

    tied down.

It seemed, at first, a small lie to tell.

    Something Like a Soul

Below are some quotes from my favorite spiritual/religious figures.  They include: Meister Eckhart, Thich Nhat Hanh, The Buddha, Mother Theresa, Khalil Gibran, Jesus of Nazareth, St. Francis of Assisi, St. Teresa of Avila, and the 14th Dalai Lama.

An odd list for an atheist?  Maybe.  Is atheist the right word?  I'm honestly not sure.  I am curious/interested in spiritual things.  I don't think that religion and spiritual things have much to do with one another.  And I'm not sure how much we need to talk about/think about a god to be spiritual beings/believe in the soul/a higher purpose.  I see them as more or less separate.  Buddhism, for example, can be atheistic, but seems rather undeniably spiritual.  There are also movements in "progressive" Christianity which downplay or deny Jesus as divine or the necessity of supernatural beliefs and instead focus on the practice of Christianity as guidelines for living justly/lovingly, etc.  I am also a great fan of Ethical Humanism.

I spent a great deal of time as a Wiccan/neopagan.  I suppose this might seem unsettling to those of you involved in more mainstream religious movements or absurd to those devoted to nonbelief.  It was a transformative/formative experience for me, however, and a key transition point for me spiritually/ethically.  It was influenced by and further developed my feminism.  It was informed by my interest in cultural anthropology, mythology, folklore, and classical literature.  And I can still see the beauty/personal usefulness of a ritual on the beach at night.  I fear I'm rambling...There is a great deal more that I could say about neopaganism and that movement's role in and impact on my life, but I will save it for another time.  For now, some spiritual/religious quotes that I believe in deeply and from figures I admire/respect:

"The knower and the known are one. Simple people imagine that they should see God as if he stood there and they here. This is not so. God and I, we are one in knowledge."  Meister Eckhart

"If the only prayer you ever say in your entire life is thank you, it will be enough."  Meister Eckhart

“People usually consider walking on water or in thin air a miracle. But I think the real miracle is not to walk either on water or in thin air, but to walk on earth. Every day we are engaged in a miracle which we don't even recognize: a blue sky, white clouds, green leaves, the black, curious eyes of a child -- our own two eyes. All is a miracle.”  Thich Nhat Hanh

“When we come into contact with the other person, our thoughts and actions should express our mind of compassion, even if that person says and does things that are not easy to accept. We practice in this way until we see clearly that our love is not contingent upon the other person being lovable.”  Thich Nhat Hanh

“You will not be punished for your anger, you will be punished by your anger.”  The Buddha

“If you judge people, you have no time to love them.” Mother Theresa

"If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other.”  Mother Theresa

“Rest in reason; move in passion.”  Khalil Gibran

“What shall it profit a man if he gains the whole world but loses his soul?”  Jesus of Nazareth

“The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks.”  Jesus of Nazareth

“While you are proclaiming peace with your lips, be careful to have it even more fully in your heart.”  St. Francis of Assisi

“It is love alone that gives worth to all things.”  St. Teresa of Avila

“This is my simple religion. There is no need for temples; no need for complicated philosophy. Our own brain, our own heart is our temple; the philosophy is kindness.”  Tenzin Gyatso, The 14th Dalai Lama

That's all for now.  I hope you all have a beautiful Thursday!

    Absolutely

So, I'm trying to reconfigure my life at the moment.  This has resulted in fewer blog entries of late, and I apologize for that.

I think I've selected two options for the new room color.  They are from Behr Paint - 420B-5 Sweet Midori or 250B-6 Poppy Glow (both of which you can find by searching from the main site).  I'm leaning towards the Midori, but no final decision yet.  This had to be considered since I was looking to buy some new sheets and then realized I had no idea what color would work in the room in a few weeks to 2 months from now (i.e. before the end of the summer).  I'm also going to need some new wall art, as the current batch probably won't go with the green.  (And when I say probably, I mean it won't go with the green.)

Wall art possibilities include this one:

    Grand Central Station

    this one:

    Walkway Over The Lake

    and this one:

    Silhouette Oak

I think I'm leaning towards the first one, but we'll see what happens.

Yesterday's baby shower was great.  I've finally gotten the giant stroller box out of the dining room.  S* even helped me wrap it when I managed to buy a less-than-sufficient amount of wrapping paper.  I was impressed.  A* ended up with an entire room's worth of gifts and received basically everying except the baby herself, a carseat, and the crib.  Everything is pink, so fingers crossed that little Adrianna doesn't turn out to be an Adrian, or they will have quite a bit of shopping and painting to do.

There's been an engagement/baby boom among my family and family friends lately.  I guess part of that is the age.  I was the only one in my twenties or thirties not currently a) newly engaged (L*), b) a few months into planning a wedding (Rebecca), c) getting married next week (Liz), d) currently pregnant (A* obviously, but also Kamilah, my new cousin-in-law), or e) caring for a new baby (De, and 3 months old, to be precise).  Well, the only one with the exception of Mary Anne, who, at 35, has been married for 14 years and has three children.  That was an interesting experience.  I did, however, have plenty to ask everyone about.  Additionally, my cousin Sharon gave birth to a little boy (her second) on Saturday, one day before the shower.  It's madness, I tell you.

I only anticipate being directly involved in L*'s wedding (since I'm in the bridal party) and A*'s baby (since we grew up together/have been very close).  The numbers, though, are kind of staggering.  Maybe it's spring/summer/June that's done it, well, combined with everyone hitting their mid-twenties and up?

New tangent.  I may or may not be going on a literary pilgrimage on Thursday.  My best from library school and I have been pondering the 11th as a good date to make the trip, but she has not gotten back to me yet.  I'm feeling like it's not going to be this week, but if it is not, I'm not sure when it's happening.

Work is busier than usual for the next few weeks with summer programs starting and myself the only arts and crafts person to both decorate and run programs for the kids.  I spent today drawing and cutting out vegetables and drawing a giant ballerina for the wall.  Wednesday will be letter-painting and (hopefully not, but potentially) paper-hanging if it doesn't happen Tuesday night as it should.

A ton to do on Tuesday to continue shifting life towards the future.  Ugh.  Did that sound like a heavy statement?  It felt like one from over here.  Much to adjust.  All good, though, and all worth it.

Also, I'm having an awesome afternoon.  :)

    Wedding-ish

So, an entry on weddings in honor of June's impending arrival and all of the weddings/engagements in the recent past and near future...

Firstly, I'd like to point everyone to Brilliant Earth, an ethical source for some beautiful sapphire engagement rings.  (Note:  Princess Diana and that whole line = sapphire engagement rings...so this isn't a totally unheard of thing.)  I'm not really a fan of doing too many things the conventional way, anyhow, though...so unheard of wouldn't faze me.  Additionally, it's always nice to wreak as little havoc as possible on people and the environment when producing your jewelry.  Did I mention I love the color blue?  Below is my favorite, but they have all different styles from very simple to vintage-style to super modern.

Other wedding-related thoughts?  I found this blog entry interesting:

Would You Invite Your Ex To Your Wedding?

I thought this was kind of a silly question, but I probably have non-traditional relationships with exes.  My thoughts?  If you're really friends with the ex and that's fine with your soon-to-be spouse (as it probably should be, or there will be troubles on the horizon), then of course you would probably want them to be at your wedding.  If they aren't really friends of yours?  Then why is this even a question?  Why would you be inviting them?

For myself, I have one "ex" who will probably be in the wedding party for any future wedding of mine...*News to you, huh, T*?  Lol.  Color-coordinating vest/tie and all.  :P

    Product Close Up

The truth of it?  He's been an amazing friend to me for a very long time, and "ex" doesn't really begin to cover it.  Now, we dated about ten years ago and didn't talk for three years before we reestablished a friendship, but for the last seven years, he's one of the key people I call for a crisis, advice, or celebration.  And one of the most reliable/trustworthy people in my life.  And we know each other well enough to call B.S. when necessary.  Which is useful at times.

So, my take?  If you have an ex like that, you'd better be inviting them.  If they aren't legitimately and purely your friend?  You should probably let all of that go before you try to go and marry someone else...

I'm in an awesome, awesome mood.  Hope everyone is feeling this good tonight.

    Listening to Train:

"Give it away, give it away, give it away,
If it's something that you got layin' round your house.
Man, let me tell ya if ain't a kiss,
    It's something you'll never miss.
Give it to somebody that don't have a thing layin' round like a prayer or a sweet sound.
Give it if you've got it,
Get it if you don't." - Train, "For Me, It's You"

Thinking about beautiful, heavy things.  And one sad one, I guess.  I'm hoping it will work itself out.

Doing some reading on women's reproductive rights/health/U.S. healthcare/gynecology/etc.  Nothing specific to recommend yet, but anybody interested could wander through NOW's website (www.now.org) for some good information.

I  love these dolls:  The String Doll Gang  If you know me, you know that I'm a fan of this kind of quirky stuff...I'm thinking specifically of the Ugly Dolls and similar stuff.  And Tim Burton characters/movies.  And this one involves knitting!  (But also looks almost sword-like!)

    Purl

The trip to my favorite lit-related location is on for June.  Must learn to tie-dye for work.  No school until late June (whew!).  No grades yet, either...to my dismay.

    Ten of My Favorite Things

***IMPORTANT:  I have noticed that Xanga is occasionally displaying ads in opposition to gay marriage/about the supposed "protection" or "defense" of heterosexual marriage and have noticed these ads on my page.  I would like to take this opportunity to state, as anyone who knows me or reads this blog regularly already knows, that I AM 100% IN FAVOR OF THE LEGALIZATION OF GAY MARRIAGE.  I think it is a travesty that this is something that even has to be debated or fought in the legal system, just as it was a travesty that African Americans were enslaved and women were denied suffrage.  This is clearly an issue of civil liberties/human rights that cuts to the core of what it means to be an American.

I regularly take action in support of gay marriage.  I hope you will consider doing this, as well.  More information can be found at the Marriage & Relationship Recognition site of the Human Rights Campaign.

Moving on.  On the radio this morning...

    "I've seen a rich man beg;
    I've seen a good man sin;
I've seen a tough man cry.
    I've seen a loser win
    And a sad man grin;
I heard an honest man lie."  - Everlast, "What It's Like"

About Me

  • I spend most of my life inside my head. I like Halloween the best. I drink too much coffee. I'll trade spring or summer for autumn any day. I'm ready to see the glass half-full. I love cats (and dogs). I believe in destiny. I have a checklist for my life. I love knitting. I consider cardinals and monarch butterflies lucky. I love hand-building pottery. I like my alone time. Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day, and sometimes I replace lunch or dinner with more breakfast. Favorite meal: Spicy coconut noodles. Thai food is amazing. Also love: Japanese and Indian food I'm in library school studying to be a children's or YA (public) librarian. I write poems I never show to anyone. Thunderstorms are my favorite. I love the smell of rain. I read good books and watch bad tv. Preferably during thunderstorms. I could live in a library or a bookstore if they'd let me. I don't give up.
